Empire Alpaca Extravaganza
October 22nd - 25th, 2010 
An AOBA-certified show with halter and performance classes.  750+ animals expected.  Check-in is on Friday October 22 with the classes starting Saturday morning.  A top show with 225+ farms, lots of vendors, educational seminars, fiber arts demonstrations and other great activities.  Halter judges:  Amanda VandenBosch, Tim Lavan and Wade Gease.  Don't miss this show.  Online registration will start in August.

Alpaca Neonatal Seminar and wet-lab
April 10th 
Springtime birthing season is quickly approaching! Come join us for a day of valuable birthing information with a hands-on Neonatal Clinic.  This clinic is comprised of a morning lecture with power-point presentation, and an afternoon of hands-on “wet lab” for each registrant. Course Manual will be provided for each attendee to take home.

The morning lecture will include topics such as
  • Female reproduction considerations including nutrition, vaccines and management.
  • Birthing (normal, abnormal, and emergencies)
  • Neonatal care (normal and high-risk cria, examinations of the dam and cria), and antibody transfer in newborns (normal process, assessment tests, correction of deficiencies).
The afternoon “wet-lab” using uterine simulators and deceased cria’s will challenge registrants to identify and correct dystocias by feel, and to deliver the cria safely.

Neonatal Clinic with Dr. Cheryl DeWitt

Island Alpaca is proud to host a Neonatal Clinic with Dr. Cheryl DeWitt, DVM from Ohio. 

Just in time for Birthing Season! This clinic is a must-have for all future breeders, experienced breeders and vetrinarians.Enjoy a morning lecture with presentations, on female reproduction/breeding. Afternoon wet-lab using uterine simulators. Invaluable emergency training, and a lot of fun! Course-book and lunch provided. Raising Alpacas 101
May 15th 

This is a non credit course offered by SUNY Ulster's Continuing and Professional Education Department.  This class will cover many aspects of alpaca ownership including an overview of the alpaca and alpaca fiber industries in the USA, animal husbandry, hands-on herd health, alpaca reproduction, nutrition and fiber evaluation.  This is the second time this course has been offered with excellent reviews from the first offering.

This class will run from 10 - 4 at Spruce Ridge Farm in Old Chatham, NY (Columbia County).  The instructor, Steve McCarthy, has been raising alpacas for over 10 years.
